Dunno about making gold.
My tailor makes things for me to DE or obliterate. Sell your ore here and there. Mats usually make good money over time.
You will not get rich instantly but you sell a 4 or 5 stacks of ore a week it adds up. Sell off raw gems or check the AH for cut ones that sell well.
Oh and pick up fishing, when you see a pool fish it out and sell them too. Over time it can add right up. Unless you buy a lot of junk off the AH then you will be broke or break even.

I'm pretty deep into BS as my secondary profession quest wise, but I will drop if it means more money. I have to run Kara for the bag quest, but I'm not really into PBE.
